Obelisk, From the Greek word meaning; "a spit". It is a monumental tapering shaft usually made of pink granite.
Capped with a pyramid icon at the top. Obelisks are solar symbols similar in meaning to pyramids. They were set in pairs, at the entrances of temples,
and to some Old Kingdom tombs.

Obelisks were first erected at Heliopolis and the practice was continued throughout the pharaonic period. Obelisks probably evolved from the so-called Benben Stone which resembles the pyramidion of an obelisk and was considered sacred to the Sun God
